Staff Profiles

Now that we are established in Middleham we have built up an extremely capable team which guarantees first class equine welfare and provides the best possible opportunity for the horses in the yard to achieve their maximum potential on the racecourse. Patrick and his assistant, Liam Bailey, first worked together some years ago at Peter Beaumont’s yard and are now reunited at the head of a first class team. All of the staff bring with them both experience and commitment and are the foundation of the yard’s success.

Patrick Holmes Trainer

Patrick Holmes

Patrick has over 30 years of experience in horseracing having been born into the trade via his late father the trainer Derek Holmes. His experience has been built up through stints with three of Yorkshire’s leading stables of recent years.

His first significant role was as Head Lad to Jimmy Fitzgerald at Norton Grange during a period when this was probably the leading mixed yard in the country. He then moved on to be assistant to Thomas Tate at Tadcaster when he was establishing himself as a training force and finally he spent 10 years as assistant to another Gold Cup winning trainer in Peter Beaumont. This core experience has been supplemented by shorter periods working with Guy Harwood and in Canada which have provided Patrick with a very rounded view of his job and underpinned his decision to take up his own licence in 2010.

Liam Bailey Assistant Trainer

Liam Bailey

Liam worked alongside Patrick at Peter Beaumont's when he first came into the racing industry over 10 years ago. Since then he has gained great experience during a very successful period with David O’Meara before joining the Little Spigot team in 2015. As well as his knowledge of horses and his experience on the gallops, Liam brings an encyclopedic knowledge of racing and form which is a great help for both race planning and sales book analysis.

Zoe Doyle Travelling Head Lass

Zoe Doyle

Zoe joined the team from Ferdy Murphy's yard in 2013 when he decided to give up his licence. She has been a tremendous addition and is a particularly capable rider who is equally at home on one of the yard's chasers or breaking in the yearlings. Zoe is also the yard's regular representative on race days and takes great pride in how the horses are presented on track.

Emma Crook Yard Supervisor

Emma Crook

Emma is another who was born into the racing industry and her knowledge of animal husbandry is top class. She organizes the morning routine in the yard and ensures that everything behind the scenes runs to plan.

Hazel Brown - Rider and Groom

Hazel Brown

Hazel is the newest addition to the team having joined us from Karl Burke’s yard late in 2016. She is a very experienced and natural horsewoman who we are delighted to have as part of our set up, it already feels like she has been with us for years.

Paula Muir Stable Apprentice Jockey

Paula Muir

We are delighted to have reached sufficient critical mass as a yard to be able to support a stable apprentice jockey and are even more pleased to have been able to secure the services of such a capable young rider as Paula. She has a tremendous work ethic combined with a willingness to learn and plenty of ability. She rode her first winners for the yard last season and is already off the mark for 2017 on the all-weather. We are really looking forward to watching her progress.

Julie Kelshaw Work Rider

Julie Kelshaw

In many ways Julie sums up the philosophy of the yard which is broader than just racing success. We are strong supporters of the MacMillan Charity race at York and Julie first started riding out for us late in 2015 to get ready for the 2016 race. While she had ridden for leisure many years ago, she hadn’t been on a horse for a long time but wanted to participate to mark her own recovery from cancer. The whole experience has literally been life changing for her, she has re-discovered her love of riding and she now regularly rides work for the yard.

Val Foster Groom

Val Foster

Val is an experienced horsewoman who supports Emma in the yard, particularly in high season when Zoe and Paula are often away at the races. She is a very valuable member of the team.

As a small yard we are not able to support a retained jockey but we are really pleased to have Paula on board as our apprentice jockey. We are also lucky to have the regular services of locally based jump jockey, John Kington, who rides the vast majority of our National Hunt runners. Otherwise the most regular jockeys we use on the flat are Danny Tudhope and Jack Garritty when their commitments to their retainers allows and we will put Amie Waugh up in Amateur jockey races when we can.
